Wales Coast Path / Point of Ayr circular walk, Flintshire

The Point of Ayre Lighthouse is an active 19th century lighthouse, sited at the Point of Ayre at the north-eastern end of the Isle of Man.It was designed and built by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of prolific writer and novelist Robert Louis Stevenson, and was first lit in 1818, making it the oldest operational lighthouse on the island.

The nature trail will lead you through a shingle beach and then onto the Marram Dunes before reaching a large heath. The centre itself is set on an ecologically important 5 mile stretch of sand-dune coastline from Cronk-y-Bing to the Point of Ayre. Offshore wildlife enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see some of the many local seabirds.

The Point of Ayre is the Island's most northerly tip and when you stand here you are closer to Scotland (14 miles) than you are to Douglas. Most of the Island's northern plain is made up from sand and gravel that was deposited here during and after the last Ice Age. Today, companies are extracting this material for the Island's building trade.
