Fitzroy Football Club returned to its old home in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, last night with a 30-piece brass band playing in the rain. The Lions' old warrior Kevin Murray led players and supporters on a march up Brunswick Street along the tramline to the ground.

A year after changing the color of the FFC logo of their jumper from blue to white Fitzroy discarded the Gorilla mascot, which had become the subject of some ridicule from opposition supporters and adopted the now familiar Lion mascot to reflect "the never say die spirit of the club" and also to provide a more aggressive and noble image.

On Sunday 1 September 1996, 25 years ago today, the Fitzroy Football Club played their last game of AFL football. But while 21 young men and an accidental coach did their job one last time, it wasn't a day about kicks, marks and balls, or goals and behinds as the AFL's youngest side at the time farewelled one of the oldest.

FITZROY people - players, coaches and supporters - have a variety of opinions and theories about why there is no longer a Fitzroy, at least at AFL level. And this weekend marks a good time to revisit the dark final few years of the old Fitzroy as the Brisbane Lions take to the MCG on Saturday night in a commemorative jumper ahead of a Hall of Fame event in Melbourne later that evening.

Fitzroy, like most, went alphabetically, and wore them for the first time in Melbourne in Round 1 1912. It was Fitzroy against South Melbourne at Lake Oval on Saturday 27 April. Not the result the team then known as the 'Maroons' wanted - a 13-point loss as the legendary Jimmy Freake made his debut - but a watershed moment nevertheless.
